Barracuda

Email security, firewalls, SASE and backup for mid-market and enterprise

  • Security & Endpoint Protection
  • Subscription

For · IT and security managers at medium-sized organisations and SMB+ with hybrid infrastructure

Barracuda Networks is a broad security provider offering products for email security (Email Protection), network security (CloudGen Firewall, SecureEdge SASE), application security (WAF-as-a-Service) and data protection (Backup). Barracuda is particularly strong in the mid-market sector and is sold through a partner model. Since its acquisition by KKR in 2022, the product range has been rapidly consolidated into subscription suites.

The licensing model mostly works on a per-user basis (email, SASE) or per appliance (firewall, WAF). Over recent years, Barracuda has steadily increased prices and actively pushed multi-year contracts. Customers who do not renegotiate in time thus face regular price increases of 10-20% on each renewal.

Procurement considerations

  • Unbundle Email Protection before signing

Barracuda tends to push Email Protection Premium Plus with archiving and backup included. In practice, only a portion of customers actually use these modules. Check in advance whether you need Email Archiving and Cloud-to-Cloud Backup before accepting the bundle.

  • Review firewall sizing before renewal

Barracuda uses CPU-core based firewall licences. When migrating to virtual or cloud firewalls, sizing is often overestimated. An independent sizing review prevents 20-40% over-purchasing.

  • Choose carefully between 1-year and 3-year contracts

Barracuda offers standard 1- and 3-year contracts. Discounts are negotiable on 3-year contracts but you lose flexibility. For organisations with highly variable staffing, a 1-year contract with price lock is often strategically better.

  • Use the partner channel for deal registration

Barracuda sells almost exclusively through partners. Deal registrations and partner escalations secure additional discounts that an end customer cannot get directly. A good procurement partner will handle this on your behalf.

Compliance risks

  • Email content in threat analysis

Barracuda Email Protection scans and stores email metadata and sometimes full messages for threat analysis. For organisations handling special personal data (healthcare, legal, HR), this requires a thoroughly drafted Data Processing Agreement and explicit EU data residency.

  • End-of-support on older appliances

Barracuda appliances require an active subscription contract for security updates. Organisations that stop renewing — or forget to renew — continue physically using the hardware but without definition updates. This poses a direct security risk that is immediately noticeable in an audit.

  • Migration after ESG incident

In 2023, Barracuda's Email Security Gateway (ESG) was impacted by a critical zero-day. Organisations still running physical ESG appliances are strongly encouraged to migrate to Email Protection (cloud). Ignoring this migration leads to compliance risks and insurance exclusions.

Frequently asked questions about Barracuda

Frequently asked questions about Barracuda licences and procurement.

What is the difference between Barracuda Email Protection Essentials, Advanced and Premium?

Essentials covers anti-spam, malware and phishing. Advanced adds impersonation protection, account takeover detection and incident response. Premium also includes Email Archiving and Backup. For organisations with elevated CEO fraud risk, Advanced is the minimum standard.

Does Barracuda offer added value beyond Microsoft Defender for Office 365?

They partially overlap functionally. Microsoft Defender has improved significantly and suffices for many organisations. However, Barracuda offers stronger impersonation and social engineering detection, plus an independent "second layer" outside Microsoft. Many enterprise clients deliberately run both side by side.

Can SoftVaro take over our Barracuda renewal?

Yes. SoftVaro analyses your current Barracuda stack, checks if you’re still paying for licences on appliances you no longer use, and negotiates the renewal. We also provide independent advice when considering consolidating to a single vendor (e.g. Proofpoint or Mimecast).
